Any sources must come from this week’s lectures.
This week’s homework is experiential and interactive. Although it will feel familiar to some students, others will experience a very different set of circumstances and decisions. Regardless, use the opportunity to write about the experience to document and process your emotional reactions.
Here is the assignment. Be sure to complete all the components for full credit:
“Play” Spent online (http://playspent.org/ (Links to an external site.)), documenting the types of choices that you made and why (not every choice, but a select few and how you thought about them based on values or norms or other social influence), then write 1-2 paragraphs on the emotions you experienced during the exercise and what you learned from the experience. Submit this as one document.
Based off three lessons:
COURSES DISCUSSED THIS WEEK:
-Dimensions of Difference: Class, Race, Gender, and More
-Dimensions of Difference
-Social Stratification
Based off three lessons:
1) Dimensions of Difference
-See how it is not difference that it bad, but meanings ascribed to difference that relate to inequality in society and in people’s lives.
-Understand what social stratification is, upward and downward social mobility, and how class is reproduced in daily life.
LECTURES FROM WEEK 1:
UNDERSTAND FROM LESSON 1:
Connect stratification and inequality to the types of capital covered in this lesson’s lectures—and examples of all of that in the readings and Tammy’s Story.
Recognize the relevance of Lauren Rivera’s work for the topic of capital and your own potential job search. Fun fact, Prof. Rivera attended the prestigious Brentwood School (across the 405) because her poor single mother worked in the bookstore there to ensure free tuition for her children. You should feel equipped to consider how this experience influenced her work and future. (homework for the week: Combine what you knew about social class with what you’ve learned to write your second forum post of the week. Be sure you include specific examples!
Then, if you’re feeling like you have a fluency with the concepts introduced in lecture and an understanding of how they’re related to the readings.
LESSON 2: Stratification and Social Class
-Connect stratification and inequality to the types of capital covered in this lesson’s lectures—and examples of all of that in the readings and Tammy’s Story.
