Week 4 Discussion Forum: Research Problems, Purpose Statements, Research Questions, and Hypotheses

Let’s Discuss!
Choose a quantitative research article, either one used in the class or one of your own choosing. You may NOT use an article already selected and posted by a classmate–so check the DF to make sure that if you choose a class article, it has not already been used for this DF–otherwise, you will have to write a new (second) post. You may not use systematic reviews, meta-analysis, scoping reviews, integrative reviews, or literature reviews.
Provide the following information about the quantitative article:
research problem
purpose statement
research questions (state actual or implied research question)
hypotheses (If the hypothesis is present, state. If no hypothesis state “none” and write one that would apply to this study)
You may cut and paste directly from the article, just be sure and provide an in-text citation per APA manual pg. 272 and Purdue Owl (Links to an external site.).
The goal is to ensure you can find these components in a research article because you will need to know how to do this for your TOE (Table of Evidence) for your EBP project.
For example:
Research Question:
“This study examines the impact of gum chewing as a type of sham feeding on the duration of postoperative ileus” (Abdollahi et al, 2013, p.1).
1. Formulate a discussion post based on the instructions for this topic.
2. Post your responses to the discussion forum.
Post one initial post by 11:59 PM (PST) Wednesday
Each discussion question initial response (the response to the question posed by the instructor) should meet the following criteria:
Be between 350-450 words (unless otherwise directed in the discussion question).
Include two references, utilizing at least one outside source and at least one class resource (textbook, class articles, etc).
The posting should be written using a scholarly style, a professional tone, and free of typos and grammatical errors. Refer to the APA Manual (7th ed.) and the Writing Center resources for guidance on how to write using a scholarly and professional style.
Utilize APA format for all references and in-text citations.
3. Respond to the postings of at least two other students by the following Sunday at 11:59 PM (PST).
Responses to peers should provide depth of information, utilize examples, apply course principles, and further the discussion.
Respond to all questions or prompts from your instructor made on your post.
Responses are more than a simple “I agree”, and can present support of the other students’ work or provide alternate ways to consider the issue.
You are invited to respond to the people who post on your original posting, however, this is NOT counted as any of your required responses to other student postings.
4. This is a 15-point assignment. Review the rubric for the Discussion Forum to ensure you are meeting assignment expectations. The rubric can be viewed by clicking on the 3 vertical dots on the top right part of this page.
