Throughout history there have been a ton of different systems used to measure, up until the formation of the metric system in 1789. “They sought to completely transform society, according to the rational principles of the Enlightenment” (Anticole, 2016), and they for sure did so. In this video, I learned a lot about how the metric system becoming the standard was good for all people. One of these reasons was because now nobles were not able to manipulate local units to extract more rent from the commoners.
US customary units are still used in Myanmar as well as Liberia and the United States of America. These 3 countries have not adopted the metric system. In America, we do use some metric measurements within science and medicine. The speed of light is one constant in science that is used in the United States, as well as the entire planet.
Personally, I feel like the United States will not ever convert to the metric system fully. I think it might be a good idea that way we are even more in line with the rest of the world and things would be more constant. We could do this slowly, that way people get used to it and learn to adjust accordingly. Almost every other country uses the metric system, I don’t understand why we in America, have not done so as well.
If all temperatures were reported in Celcius vs Fahrenheit, I would feel confused at first but I could learn to understand the new measurements.

For week four in this course, we covered the topic on the metric system and customary units. Watching the video posted I learned a few things that I did not know. One thing that I learned was that the new metric system was redone to achieve better measurements. There were multiple ways of taking different measurements back in the day. Another thing that I learned was that a few different colonies used their old ways of taking different measurements.
In the U.S. we do use metric measurements. Every day we use the metric system to measure how much something may weigh, how long something is, and/or how far something may be. A few examples would be, measure how much someone weighs, how long it is from one side of the room to another, and how far it is from one side of the room to the other.
In my opinion, I do not think the U.S. should completely convert to using the metric system. The reason for my opinion is that why do we need to do it now after all these years, we do not need to relearn something that we already know how to do so well now. My other opinion is that we should not have to change the way we measure temperatures from Celsius instead of Fahrenheit. Again, why change it after all this time, it is unnecessary.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
