In preparation for any potential crisis, a communication team should work with internal departments to conduct a thorough assessment of both external and internal opportunities and threats, along with an assessment of internal strengths and weaknesses. This SWOT analysis provides communicators with a detailed overview of items of focus when crafting a crisis communication plan. In other words, the information discovered in a SWOT analysis exercise helps when planning what is required to mitigate your weaknesses and defend against threats.

Choose the crisis scenario you will be working with for both Project Part One and Project Part Two of this course. Using the information found in Project Part One for your selected crisis, construct an overview of the situation and conduct a SWOT analysis for your organization.

Crisis Overview
Crisis and Stakeholder Summary: In the context of your SWOT analysis, summarize the crisis scenario you chose for your course projects and the potential stakeholders and audiences you and your crisis communication team will be interacting with via your crisis communication plan.
Effects of Crisis: Explain how the stakeholders and audiences you identified could be affected by this crisis. Be sure to describe their potential impacts on your organization’s weaknesses and threats as they relate to the crisis.
Strategic Response: Outline your strategic response to potential media coverage of the crisis, including how you intend to calm concerns should your organization’s weaknesses and threats go unaddressed or poorly addressed.
Highlight any strengths or opportunities you identified in your SWOT analysis that may help reduce or prevent escalation of these concerns.
