Cumulative Writing Project (CWP) #1
Due Date: November 4, 2022
Estimated Page Length: 3 pages (double-spaced)
Directions: This semester, you will compose a literature review on a social problem that is influenced by linguistics. Completing this week’s task–Cumulative Writing Project (CWP) #1–will enable you to begin this work.
In order to successfully complete this assignment, you must compose a three page (double-spaced) essay.
Your research question. Consider the social problem that you intend to study and how it might be influenced by linguistics. What are you curious about? What will you investigate as a researcher? Frame this as a question. For example: How does our country’s racial history influence perceptions about code switching?
A brief overview that explains why this question is interesting to you and to others.
A summary of what you have learned so far from informal sources and your initial exploration of our library databases.
A description of what you must explore further and how your topic might be refined (or made more specific).
Specifications: Your work in this essay is more informal than a standard research paper, but it will still reflect features and conventions important to higher-level academic work.
Your essay should be well organized, providing an introduction to your research topic, a clear indication of your research question, an articulate overview of the relevant background (why your research question is of interest to you and to others), and a coherent overview of what you’ve discovered about your topic so far. Your work will conclude by pointing to your next steps as a researcher and writer.
While you should try to use clear language that reflects college-level academic expectations, you may use the first person to describe your interests and findings as a researcher.
You should use both attribution (“according to Smith….” or “findings from the National Education Policy Center….”) and in-text citations to show readers where you’re drawing from the ideas, writing, or research of others.
While your first draft of the task (due November 4, 2022 ) can include informal research from online sources, your revision of this essay (due November 11, 2022 ) should include not only information from your informal research, but also from at least one research article you find in the library databases.
Evaluation:
I will provide feedback on your first draft of this essay.
Your revised essay should be double-spaced, presented in 12-point font, and submitted to our class Blackboard Assignment Portal on November 11, 2022.
Your work will be assessed using the rubric that follows.
