How do Swimme and Tucker depict the “story of the universe?” Please spend at least a page unpacking their depiction of this incredibly vast story. In the process, please be sure to touch on the following key stages of cosmic unfoldment: the big bang; the formation of stars, supernova events, and the connection between these supernova events and the formation of planet earth; as well as the emergence of life on planet earth (from single-celled organisms to human beings with complex brains).
Next, reflect on Swimme and Tucker’s depiction of human beings as a species who possess “symbolic consciousness.” What is “symbolic consciousness,” and how does it enable us to impact the evolutionary world (for good or for ill)? Reflect on one (or both) of the following expressions of “symbolic consciousness:” Joy Harjo’s “Remember” and/or St. Francis of Assisi’s “The Canticle of Creation.” In what ways do these written works come out of a profound sense of communion with the earth and wider cosmos? Can any particular insights or lines from either of these poems inspire you to personally deepen your sense of connection with and ethical commitment to the natural world?
Somewhere in your paper, you will include at least three quotes from Swimme and Tucker’s Journey of the Universe, as well as at least one quote from either “Remember” or “The Canticle of Creation.”
Please double space you paper and use 12 pt. Times New Roman font. Please also use 1 inch margins.
Please weave your quote (or quotes) in fluidly, by avoiding “dropped quotes.” Cite the source of your quote by including the author’s last name and the page number.
This is well done: Pope Francis asserts that “the universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely” (Pope Francis, 233).
Please avoid something like this: In Laudato si’, Pope Francis reflects on the presence of God throughout the natural world. “The Universe unfolds in God, who fills it completely.
Joy Harjo, “Remember:”
St. Francis, “The Canticle of Creation:”
