According to the “World Health Organization” it is a general perceptive among consumers that conventional or natural foods are healthier. In regards to this there are three issues regarding human health when consuming GM food. Allergenicity; Gm foods are discouraged from being gene transferred with known foods that contain allergens. Traditionally bred food does not get tested for allergens typically but all GM food must be evaluated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and World Health Organization. Gene Transfer from GM food to the body or gastrointestinal tract would raise concern if it affected health in humans. The main concern is the transfer of Antibiotic resistance genes and is discouraged. They go even further by protecting traditionally grown food by separating the two types in fields because evidence of gene transfer has been detected in products for humans from food that was originally intended for animals. These extensive steps are in place to prevent Gm foods from being dangerous and there are no solid reports of them causing harm when they have undergone rigorous evaluation.

Article 2 – Genetically modified foods: safet, risks and public concerns.
Genetically modified foods have been used to counter natural occurring issues with food. The Papaya is a big crop for Hawaii and their industry was about to fully collapse due to the plant dying out. A virus known as the “Ring Spot” was going to totally destroy the entire crop without being challenged. Due to efforts to genetically modify Papaya’s, 80% of them are now resistant to this virus. Without such efforts, papaya’s might not be grown on Hawaii anymore or at all if the virus spread unchecked to anywhere else Papayas could grow. To this day there is not any conventional or organic method to control this virus. Does not mean it does not exist but a solution was found through modifying this food at its literal core.

Based on this article, genetically modified foods are not unhealthier to ingest than natural foods. This article explains what genetically modified foods are and how they affect the body compared to that of not genetically modified foods. The article uses the World Almanac Education Group as they state that “independent scientific organizations have concluded that genetically modified organisms are safe to grow and consume”. With this quote, it is scientifically proven, but most scientists believe that genetically modified foods do not harm the body in the way most people think that they do compared to natural foods. However, people still have their concerns because of the label on foods that are modified and they view it as a warning label. This explanation supports my claim that genetically modified foods are not unhealthy to ingest than natural foods because of the scientific tests done by the World Almanac Education Group.

This article further proves my claim that genetically modified foods are not unhealthier to ingest than natural foods. The Plant Biotechnology Journal uses different science experiments to see the effect of genetically modified herbicide-tolerant crops on different foods and how it differs from not using them. They view this herbicide as a way to help the environment because it speeds up the process of foods ripening and prevents them from dying more often. When this herbicide is not used, the machinery and crop buildings that emit exhaust and harsh chemicals into the air have a greater harmful effect in the long run. While my stance is that Organic foods are healthier than conventional foods, the Genetic Literacy Project teams have found that there is little to no change between the two. Firstly, let’s address the major concerns, of nutrition, and safety. According to the UK food standard agency, there is nearly no difference in whether organic foods are nutritionally better than conventional foods. There were a few debates by the British Journal of Nutrition, however, they were very minor, arguing that organic foods had lower amounts of acids that led to cardiovascular disease and several other minor benefits. So, we are brought to question the safety between the two. It was discovered from several studies, consuming organic foods was able to reduce the chance of cancer by around 0.5%. Besides that, in the question of pesticides, it was discovered that there were many more organic pesticides on organic food rather than synthetic ones. In addition to the question of pesticides, most crops have crop protection items and use non-toxic pesticides now, making them not as harmful. In conclusion, organic foods should be used overall for the small reduced chance of cardiovascular disease, and cancer, but if you are not aiming for that and plan to stay conventional, it is good to remember that nutrition-wise, they aren’t so different.

2. Organic foods, are they safe and more nutritious than conventional foods? I believe so, and this is also the question asked by Mayo Clinic. Mayo Clinic’s answer to the question starts by focusing on defining organic farming and how to check if the food is organic. Besides that, they do question the downsides of organic foods, which they discovered, the only downside is its cost. However, its upsides are great. They discovered that it can contain small moderate increases of nutrients than conventional, increased omega-3 fatty acids for animals, and lower levels of toxic metals inside or outside the foods, for example, Cadium, reduced pesticide residue, and bacteria. Concluding, Mayo Clinic found that organic food has a general benefit over conventional foods, in addition, they added several ways to make organic food safer, such as intensive washing to remove toxins, and support the idea of organic foods over conventional foods.

I oppose on this thesis that organic fruits and vegetables are healthier to ingest than those conventionally grown. During my research, I found out that the difference between organic and non-organic food is that organic food comes from a cleaner and safer farming that doesn’t do harm the world whereas conventionally grown food use chemicals such as pesticides that can cause health concerns to humans. All the while, it would be better to eat organic fruits and vegetables verses conventional, organic foods are still likely to have pesticides in their own crop. This means that it would make no differences if intaking organic produce can make you healthier. According to studies, all foods contain chemicals and some plants that are grown do produce some pesticides which is also harmful to people. Studies has also shown that there is lower percentage of pesticides in conventional foods then what people make it out to be. Although we believe that organic produces are much healthier to ingest, organic is just as bad as conventional food so it would not be true that organic fruits and vegetables are healthier to ingest.

I oppose on this thesis that organic fruits and vegetables are healthier to ingest than those conventionally grown. According to Michael Pollan, Best Selling Author, he stated that you don’t have to eat organic to eat healthy (9). The argument is that eating organic verses eat conventionally grown produce is not the actual issue. The actual issue is that human does not consume enough fruits and vegetables as they should because they are worried if there are consuming high level of chemical pesticides. After further research, being able to get the best nutrition is far healthier than focusing on the harmful contamination we would intake. Although this has been an issue through society that most people who are poor do not eat a lot of fruits and vegetables because they cannot afford the organic kind. But the argument is that it doesn’t really matter which one you choose to eat. What matters is how much fruits and vegetables a human can consume a day. An increase in consumption would reduce illness such as cancer and other types of risk. At the end of the day, it’s not about eating organic produce that will get you healthier, it’s definitely about how much you intake.
